Remembering

Twelve years ago America was brought to a halting stop as the world watched Al Qaeda fly planes into the World Trade Center, the Pentagon (were brought down by brave passengers) and a Pennsylvania field. This morning I look around at students who were no more than six years old when these events occurred and think that they can't really remember life before 9/11. Some of my students were only three... they have learned about it through books, magazines, the internet and history classes.

Not me. I learned about it in the same building I am currently sitting in. I was in 3D arts with Mr. Malicki. I was working on a pottery wheel when Mr. Stoner came and told us to stop what we were doing and turn on the news. I sat, covered in clay, staring at the TV as the next plane hit the second tower. Somehow I knew then that it would be kids my age that would be fighting back. I knew it would be my friends who had already shown interest in the military who would feel the full weight of what was happening. I knew that life as it had been was now over and drastic changes were going to happen.

As I pause today to remember that fateful morning twelve years ago, I think of kids who never met their father, wives who lost their husbands, mothers who lost children, and the list could go on. Today, I pray for peace that passes understanding to envelop them and I also pray that there will be a time that peace will be the way of the world.
